Nanjing has been the capital city of six different dynasties throughout Chinese history:

  • Liu Song (420-479 AD)
  • Southern Qi (479-502 AD)
  • Liang (502-557 AD)
  • Chen (557-589 AD)

Ming Dynasty Capital

Nanjing served as the capital of China during the Ming Dynasty from 1368 to 1421, before the capital was moved to Beijing.

Modern History

In 1927, Nanjing became the capital of the Republic of China. The city played a significant role during World War II and has since developed into a major economic and cultural center.
